The 92-year old Shanghai University of Finance & Economics is one of China’s prestigious universities directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education and ranked in the national “211” Program. It is also ranked in the group of key universities which the State aims to develop into high-level higher education institutions. In 1997, Jiang Zemin (President of PRC at that time) wrote for it an inscription, “To develop Shanghai University of Finance & Economics into a first-class socialist university of the new century.” Established in 1917, the university was previously the Business Department of Nanjing Higher Normal School. Yang Xinfo, a famous social activist and patriotic democrat, used to be the director. After years of transition, it became an independent college in August, 1932, by the name of “The State-funded Shanghai Business College”. At that time, it was the only undergraduate business college funded by the State. |
